It may be July but TikTok is already conjuring AW ’21 trends — this year, dark academia has transformed into ‘Bella Swan/Elena Gilbert-core.’ The protagonists of mainstream vampire media, these characters wear muted tones and an overall casual wardrobe. But, the simplicity is arguably the appeal; by reworking past trends, anyone can easily style this emerging aesthetic.
Yet to be named, this style is basic; henley tops or fitted cardigans over camisoles, often a different colour to emphasise the lace detail, low rise jeans or denim in general, with the look being topped off with casual staples like Converse. The henley top can be swapped for a flannel shirt, however, the basis of the outfit is always simple, but fitted, items. Personally, this is why the style is so appealing — the key is the clothes being fitted, and therefore flattering, to the wearer. This means that items like low-rise jeans could be easily changed for high-waisted if it flatters the wearer more. The two components of this style are the colour palette and the basic fitted clothes, meaning this style is relatively easy to copy.
Another noticeable feature is the style’s 00s roots. Twilight was originally published in 2005, and the film was released in 2008. Because of this, it is understandable that this Bella Swan-inspired style has remnants of past 00s trends. The lace camisoles and fitted cardigans from the previous autumn can be repurposed for this year, allowing wearers to put a new spin on these old trends. Also, since this is inspired by late 00s fashion, your old Hollister items would be the perfect addition. (Who knew in 2021 I’d be suggesting to wear Hollister again?!)
In terms of 00s, a film with a similar style is Jennifer’s Body (2009.) Fans of both the ‘Bella Swan/Elena Gilbert’ and ‘y2k’ style could look towards Jennifer’s Body for a perfect combination of the two. The outfit silhouettes are relatively similar, with Jennifer Check swapping low-rise jeans for mini skirts, or henley tops for cropped and fitted hoodies. The colour palette also leans more ‘y2k,’ but this would be ideal for anyone with pieces from this trend wanting to incorporate them into looks for future seasons.

The appeal of this style is the simplicity, making it a great go-to style for the upcoming colder season. And with the outfits being a great way to repurpose old trend pieces, there is no doubt the trend will only grow as the weather turns colder.
